Pian di Spagna is a protected riserve situated at the confluence of two valleys (Valtellina and Valchiavenna), it is ideal for the birdwatching and it includes Lago di Mezzola and the wetland area which separates the small lake from Lake Como.
The reserve is an alluvial plain formed by rubale brought from river Adda and it hosts many migratory species. The birdwatching is common in every period of the year: the ducks are the protagonists in winter, they reach the reserve from the North to pass the winter there, while thousands of different birds find in this natural oasis an area where to rest and feed themselves in spring and autumn.
The most common species of birds that populate Pian di Spagna are ducks, swans, coots, grebes, cormorants, gulls, buzzards, kites and hawks. There are other species as well as reptiles, amphibians, fishes and small mammals.
The natural reserve of Pian di Spagna is the ideal place for naturalistic excursions, specially recommended for those who love birdwatching.
